Lent Quote 30

30. From : Contemplations

O Time the fatal wrack of mortal things,
That draws oblivion’s curtains over kings,
Their sumptuous monuments, men know them not,
Their names without a Record are forgot,
Their parts, their ports, their pomp’s all laid in th’ dust.
Nor wit, nor gold, nor buildings scape times rust;
But he whose name is grav’d in the white stone*
Shall last and shine when all of these are gone.

Anne Bradstreet, 1612-72

*The white stone refers to Revelation 2.17
To everyone who conquers …I will give a white stone, and on the white stone is written a new name that no one knows except the one who receives it.
