One Word: Bethlehem

Bethlehem

And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.
Matthew 2.6, quoting Micah 5.2

  • Bethlehem was a small, insignificant village about 5 miles from Jerusalem, the kind of place no one expected anything significant to happen yet it had been the birthplace of King David, which was why prophecies said that the Messiah would be born there. What do you think it would feel like to be a long-term resident of Bethlehem?
  • We are often surprised when something newsworthy happens in our own backyard. Why do you think that feel like that?
  • It’s good to feel proud of and love the place we live in , but that pride and love can easily become destructive, exclusive nationalism. How do we get the balance right?
