In the Middle Ages many people prayed using
Books of Hours, prayers that took them through the day, based on the daily cycle of prayers used by monks and nuns. They were precious books, sometimes richly decorated, sometimes plain, and often people added prayers they particularly liked. People often had their portraits painted holding their Books of Hours and the Virgin Mary is often portrayed reading from one.
