Trinity 15
1 Timothy 6.6-19, Luke 16.19-end

Today's readings challenge us to think about our relationship with money. They contain hard-hitting reminders that "you can't take it with you". Jesus spoke often about money, and the way people used it. Inequality between rich and poor were as common and as damaging in New Testament times as they are today, and Jesus saw its effects on a daily basis. It was very easy then, as it is now, though for people to decide not to notice things which were inconvenient to them, as the rich man in his story does, walking past Lazarus repeatedly as he sits and begs at his gates.
There's an interesting detail in this story - Lazarus, the poor man, is given a name and an identity, while the rich man is anonymous (he is sometimes known as Dives, but that is just the Latin word for "rich"). In the Bible, unlike in real life, it is the poor man who is seen, known and named, rather than the rich man.

  • How do you feel about your money and possessions? Are you a hoarder or "easy come, easy go"?
  • How do you think your attitudes to money were formed? How was money treated in your family of origin? Were there anxieties around it?
  • How do you feel about this coming winter, and the cost of living crisis it will bring to so many?

ALL AGE IDEAS

in today's Gospel passage, Jesus tells a parable - a story to make us think - about a rich man who has everything he could possibly want and a poor man, who has to beg for food at the rich man's gate. After they die the poor man, Lazarus, is given everything he wants, but the rich man is left with nothing, miserable and suffering. The rich man realises he should have helped Lazarus, but now it is too late. Jesus tells the story to help people think about what they do with their money and possessions. It says in the Bible that everyone should be treated fairly, and that we should especially take care of those who are vulnerable or ill, or who don't have enough money or food, but sometimes it is hard to share.

  • Think about the things you have - the toys, books and clothes. You could do some tidying up and sorting out of them. Are there some that are really special to you and others that you don't use at all.?
  • Talk about what it might feel like to give away some of the things you have that you don't really need.
  • Have you ever really needed or wanted something you couldn't have, because you couldn't afford it? How did that feel?
  • When do you spend money? How do you decide what to buy with it?
IT'S ALL HAPPENING AT SEAL CHURCH...

Trinity 14
Amos8.4-7, Luke 16.1-13
The prophet Amos challenged the injustice around him in his time, and Jesus often echoed his words. The parable he tells in today's Gospel story, often called the Unjust Steward, might seem to be praising injustice, but Jesus doesn't mean us to take this message from it. It is, instead, a challenge to us to consider what drives our behaviour, and who we serve and give our allegiance to. Kevin Bright explores the story in his sermon today, especially in the light of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth.

ALL AGE IDEAS

Jesus tells his followers that they can't serve two masters. They have to choose who they will follow, who they will be influenced by.

  • Who do you take notice of and follow? Who do you look up to?
  • Are there people in your class or friendship group who seem to be the ones others look to to make decisions and take a lead? Are they good people to follow or not?
  • The prophet Amos said that people should treat others fairly, and not just try to make as much money as possible. Can you think of people today who aren't treated fairly? You could look for news stories about them or draw pictures of them. You could make a poster about something you feel should change in the world.

Trinity 13
Isaiah 40.1, 6-10, Luke 15.1-10
As we mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth, we are aware of the powerful sense of loss which accompanies this bereavement, and any bereavement. Today's sermon explores Jesus' parables about a lost sheep and a lost coin. What might they have to say to us at this sad moment?

ALL AGE IDEAS

People are sad when someone they love dies, and this week we have all mourned the death of Queen Elizabeth. Even though most of us never met her, she was important to us, and we will miss her. Jesus tells some stories in today's Gospel reading about a shepherd who loses one of his sheep, and a woman who loses a precious silver coin. They search everywhere for them, because they are so important, and in Jesus' story they are very happy when they find them. The story reminds us that God loves us so much that he will never lose us. We are safe in his hands, and so are people who have died, like the Queen.

Trinity 12
Deuteronomy 30.15-end, , Luke 14.25-33
Today's readings call us to think about what it means to be truly alive. Life isn't just physical existence; it is far more than that. But how do we "choose life", as Moses said in the first reading, and what did Jesus mean when he told his followers they might need to "hate life itself" if they were to follow him?

ALL AGE IDEAS

The Bible tells the story of the time when the people of Israel were slaves in Egypt, and how God sent Moses to lead them to freedom in Israel. Eventually they escaped from Egypt, but then they spent 40 years wandering around in the desert, before they were ready to go to their new home. Just before they crossed over the river Jordan into Israel, Moses spoke to them and told them to "choose life" when they got there, to make decisions about how they lived that would be good for them and those that came after them.

  • Can you feel your own pulse, or someone else's ? It's a sign that your heart is beating and that you are alive and well. There's a video here telling you more about how to do that, and how your heart works. https://youtu.be/tF9-jLZNM1
  • Even if our hearts are beating, though, we don't always feel very alive! What do you do when you feel down in the dumps, bored or sad?
  • What good things can you do to help yourself have a healthy body, a healthy mind and a healthy spirit ? You could draw a picture of yourself when you are feeling full of life.
Music at Seal Church
Seal Church Children's choir starts its new term on Wednesday September 7th at the new, slightly earlier, time of 4.30pm. It's just half an hour of singing fun, which is a wonderful way for children to build confidence, and learn some musical basics as they go along. It's for any primary age children, and its completely free !
Save the date!  A forthcoming musical treat at Seal Church. Free, with a retiring collection and refreshments.
