One Word Advent Reflections - Starting Dec 1

Advent daily meditations and colouring sheet (Starting Dec 1)

If this year's Advent series looks strangely familiar, that's because it is!
This year I am republishing an Advent series I did a few years ago, since it seems to me that it speaks into our present situation. Life is busy and fraught. There is so much to worry about at the moment. This series, originally published in 2016, focussed, as the title suggests, on One Word, just one word, each day, which I hope will lead us to the One Word who is Jesus.

Advent daily meditations and colouring sheet... (Starting Dec 1)

Less is more, so they say, and that’s especially true in Advent.

At a time of year when the world can feel very noisy and demanding, we can easily feel overwhelmed. Yet, what God did at Christmas was essentially very simple. One baby, born to one family, in one specific place, at one specific time.

That’s why this year our daily meditations will focus on just one word a day, one Advent word that will help us prepare to celebrate the birth of the Word made flesh, Jesus. There will be a few questions each day to prompt your thoughts or discussions. You can find the meditations here on the blog each day - there will be facebook and twitter links too, so follow us there and they will pop up in your feed.

You can ponder these Advent words on your own, or talk about them with others. There will be an accompanying colouring sheet for you to fill if you’d like to as well, perhaps writing the word in each day’s space, or representing it in some other way, It’s up to you.

The series starts on December 1, though Advent really begins on the Sunday before, and runs through to Christmas Eve. It doesn’t matter, though, if you get behind. Take as long as you need over each word.

Here's a prayer to say as Advent begins.

Advent God,
we journey with you,
to Bethlehem’s stable
and a new-born King,
ears attuned
to the song of angels,
eyes alert
for Bethlehem’s star.
Forgive us
if on our journey
if we are distracted
by the tempting offers
of this world.
Keep our hearts aflame
with the hope
of Christmas,
and the promise
of a Saviour. Amen

Advent Sunday

An Advent wreath with one candle litToday marks the beginning of Advent (not Dec 1, though that's when our Advent reflections (see below) will start) Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas, and is partly a time of preparation for it. Today's sermon explores how it might be more than that, though, encouraging us not just to look back to the coming of Christ (Advent is from the Latin "adventus" meaning "coming") in Bethlehem long ago, but to the ways he comes to us now, and the way he will come to us in the future.

ALL AGE IDEAS FOR ADVENT

Today is the first Sunday in Advent. Advent is from a Latin word, 'adventus' which means 'coming'. We think about Jesus coming to us as a baby in Bethlehem, but also about the way we might find him today. During Advent we try to  to look around us and to reflect and pray - to notice God at work in the love and joy around us, and also in the things that might need to change in our world, so that we can join in with God's work. That can be difficult when everything is so busy as people get ready for Christmas, but we will enjoy Christmas more if we have been able to stop be still.
There are lots of ways of reflecting during Advent. You could:
  • Make an Advent ring with four coloured candles and one white candle. In church we use three purple candles and one pink one (for the third Sunday of Advent). We light one candle each Sunday in Advent, and the white one on Christmas Day. In some churches the candles are red.
  • Make an Advent countdown candle. Mark 24 lines on a plain candle and burn down through one line each day, being still and thinking, or talking to one another as you do.
  • Send Mary and Joseph on an Advent journey. Find or make a Mary and Joseph - you could make them by decorating some cardboard tubes if you haven't got any. Take it in turns to hide them somewhere in your house each day during Advent for others to find, and think about the long journey they had to make from Nazareth to Bethlehem before Jesus was born. What might it be like for people who have to leave their home and become refugees today?
  • Collect a "reverse Advent calendar"  - a box into which you can put one item of food each day during Advent. On Christmas Eve, bring it to church, and put it in the foodbank box by the font.
  • Follow our Advent series this year, which is called "One Word" , and looks at one word connected with Advent or Christmas and asks some questions about it. There is also a colouring sheet to fill in each day, where you could write the word or draw something connected to it in each space. There are copies of the booklet and the colouring sheet in church, but you can also download them from the link below, or you can follow it on the church blog, where each day's post will appear, from Dec 1 onwards.
What will you do to make Advent a holy and blessed time?

CHRISTMAS LIGHTING around the village HELP NEEDED NEXT SATURDAY

Marion Gilchrist writes: "We now have a healthy number of volunteers to climb ladders, but if you have a tall ladder you might be able to lend for the morning of Saturday 3rd, we would be very grateful, as we now have more climbers than ladders!. Most are saying they have time on Saturday 3rd, rather than Sunday 4th, so we will aim to get as much done that day as possible.
I would be very grateful if 1 or 2 people might be able to oversee the putting back of the equipment safely in the Village Hall at the end of the session, as I may have to leave a bit earlier than finish time. If you feel you could help in this way, please let me know.
Erman in Deniz's cafe, is ready to take the final number for our bacon sandwich order - please remember, this is our way of saying thanks to those of you who have braved the elements and giving of your time, so any veggie options need to be directed to me in advance please. Only people who have committed in advance, will have a sandwich orders for them - this includes those hanging lights in areas other than the High Street. You just have to be near Deniz's at 10am please. marionjgilchrist@gmail.com

Christ the King
Today marks the end of the Church's year. The new year starts on Advent Sunday next week, as we begin to tell the cycle of stories of the life of Jesus, from his birth in Bethlehem through to his crucifixion, resurrection and ascension. The cycle culminates today as we ponder what it means to call Christ "king", allowing him to influence and guide us in the way we live. The Gospel story is the story of the Penitent Thief, who is crucified next to Jesus and defends him. The cross becomes a throne, a sign of the power of Christ which is known in his love.
Kevin Bright is our preacher today and will be helping us to explore these themes.

ALL AGE IDEAS

Today we think about Jesus as a king.
  • If you were king or queen, and could change anything you like about the world, what would you change?
  • Make a crown - you could use cardboard, or make one out of leaves and bendy sticks -  and, as you do so, talk about what it is like to tell other people what to do, or to for other people to tell you what to do.
  • There are some ideas for leaf crowns here

SAFEGUARDING SUNDAY
Today is Safeguarding Sunday in the Church of England. Safeguarding is at the heart of the Christian message. Jesus constantly brought into view those who were vulnerable and often overlooked in his society, healing and helping those on the margins, noticing and welcoming children, who many others ignored. If you would like to know more about safeguarding, or have any concerns about abuse you have experienced, witnessed or heard about, you can contact our Parish Safeguarding Officer, Marshall Kent, or the vicar, or the Diocesan Safeguarding team. More information about Safeguarding can be found on Rochester Diocese website here. https://www.rochester.anglican.org/safeguarding/

Her funeral will be held in Aston on Trent on Dec 2

CHRISTMAS LIGHTING around the village

Remembrance Sunday

Often on Remembrance Sunday our minds are focussed on wars in the past, but this year we have all watched the news from Ukraine, night after night. In truth, war has always been a constant presence in our world, but rolling 24/7 news makes that more obvious to us now than it might have been to our ancestors. In every generation, people have have faced times of trouble and sorrow, and felt its effects - fear, disorientation, powerlessness. Today's sermon explores what we might learn from the wisdom of those who have gone before us in dealing with our own feelings as we contemplate the current crises that face us.

ALL AGE IDEAS

Remembrance Sunday can be a sad day for some people. Thinking about people fighting and hurting each other can make us feel frightened.
  • Have you seen news reports of people fighting? How does it make you feel when you see these pictures? Talk to the grown-ups who look after you about what you feel.
  • You might like to watch the video below, which reminds us that, though scary things happen sometimes, good things happen too, and life returns. The rabbit in the video is helped when he is scared by being with friends. As well as our families and friends, the Bible says that God is always with us in difficult times. We can tell God how we are feeling too.

UPDATE ON CHRISTMAS LIGHTING - HELP NEEDED PLEASE!

Know Your Neighbours have been able to make plans  regarding the street lighting for this Christmas. Resoundingly, the results were in favour of having icicle lights in the High Street, with reduced daily lighting (4pm-7pm)  and reduced timespan from lighting up to turning off.(Dec 11th to January 5th)
As we are having the lighting in the High Street for a shorter period this year, we are hoping to get a band of merry street lighters (helping with the hanging of the lights) on the mornings of the weekend December 3rd and 4th. Please could you let Marion Gilchrist (marionjgilchrist@gmail.com) know over this weekend, if you could help on either of those mornings, so that we can see whether this would work. We will need at least 5 ladder climbers, 5 on the ground to unravel and 5 at bottom of ladders. This is always a good fun activity, but we do need to see who can commit now please.

Third Sunday before Advent
The resurrected people of Stanley Spencers home village climb from their graves in a traditional English churchyard. In today's Gospel reading, Jesus is presented with a hypothetical problem which seems to be either about a quirk of marriage law, or about the nature of heaven. In reality though, like so many of our debates and arguments there is a hidden agenda. In the sermon I explore what that might be, and the light it sheds on our own arguments.

  • What did you last argue with someone about?
  • How do you feel about that argument now?
  • In Stanley Spencer's painting (right) he imagines the resurrection of the dead happening in the churchyard of a traditional English village. What do you believe about life after death, and why?
ALL AGE IDEAS

In today's Gospel reading, a group of people come to Jesus and ask him a complicated question. They are called Sadducees (pronounced "sad-you-sees". Their beliefs are slightly different from another group we often hear about in the Gospels, called Pharisees (pronounced "farisees"). Sadducees and Pharisees didn't get on with each other. The Sadducees want to catch Jesus out and make him say things that show whose side he is on, but Jesus doesn't want to take sides. He doesn't think it is good to have pointless arguments just to see who is stronger. Instead we should be learning to love each other so that we can all live good lives.
  • Draw a lot of stars on a piece of paper. Think of all the people you have met over the last couple of days (or do this each day next week) Write each person's name on a star and something you think is good about them. It might be easy to do this for some people who you like and get along with, but much harder to do for people you don't get along with. Pray for all the people you name in your stars.
