The Gospel starts where everything starts; “in the beginning”. If that feels familiar, then it is supposed to. It mirrors the beginning of the book of Genesis, “In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the earth…” (Genesis 1.1) John is telling us that God is doing something new in Jesus. He is bringing about a new creation. Everything changes because of him. That was the experience of this writer, and those he wrote for in his early Christian community. They had been brought together, Jews and Gentiles, men and women, slaves and free, into a new community, where they were to love one another as equals. They had found a whole new way of life.
REFLECTION POINTS:
• We all have to begin where we are. Where are you at the moment? What do you feel like right now? What is bothering you and delighting you at the moment?
• Can you think of some area in your life where you might like a new beginning?
• Tell God about the new beginning you would like, and ask God to show you the steps you need to take to cooperate with his work in you.
