Words can make things happen. “Will you marry me?” “Would you like to accept this job?” “Will you forgive me?” “I’ve got something to tell you…” “I want a divorce”. Words can open up new possibilities, or shut them down, and once they have been said, they can’t be unsaid. In our reflections a couple of days ago, we thought about John calling Jesus the “Word”.. In the Bible, it was the words God spoke which created the world. “God said ‘Let there be light’ and there was light!” (Genesis 1.3). John is telling us here that Jesus, the Word of God, is going to speak God’s creative love into the world again, and create new possibilities for the people and communities who respond to them.
REFLECTION POINTS
•
Can you remember any times when you have said or heard words which have changed your life or the lives of others?
•
What are the best and the worst things that anyone has said to you?
•
When and how did you first hear about Jesus in a way that changed you or made you want to know more? Has the Word of God created something new in you?
ALL AGE IDEA
•
Draw an outline of the word “Jesus” and write in it some words that come into your mind when you hear it.
