Day Three: The Stable

Most depictions of the Nativity in the Western classical tradition show Mary, Joseph and Jesus housed in a stable which looks as if it is about to fall down, or sometimes in the ruins of a Temple. That isn’t just to emphasize the poverty of the Holy Family, or their desperation in having to accept any shelter they could find for Jesus to be born. The ruins are symbols of the ruined and damaged world into which Jesus is born, marked by oppression and suffering. He will bring life into dead or dying, ruined lives.

This stable doesn’t look as if it will keep out the rain, or even remain standing for long.

For Reflection

Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach,  the restorer of streets to live in. Isaiah 58.12:

Have you ever had to live among ruins whether that was in unsafe housing, or in the ruins of a life that felt as if it was falling apart?

What was it like to do so?

Pray for those who live among ruins today that they might be able to find new life and healing.
