Before we start to look at the details, let’s look at the pictureas a whole.
In real life, it isn’t very big, 32.9 × 48 cm (around 12 x
18 inches), just a little bigger than A3 paper (two sheets of A4). It was painted
on vellum and was designed to be small enough to hold in the hands and pass
around, so that people could get close enough to it to see the details.

FIRST LOOK
What do you notice first in the picture? What do you notice next?
•
What shapes, spaces and colours are there in the
picture?
•
What is in the background, middle ground and
foreground?
•
Where has the artist put us, the viewer, in
relation to the picture? Are we looking down or up to the scene, from a long
way off or close by?
•
How would you describe the picture to someone
who couldn’t see it?
•
What do you think the artist hoped you might
feel and think as you looked at the picture? What do you think and feel?
For Reflection:
This is the Lord’s doing; it is
marvellous in our eyes. Psalm 118.23:
What have you noticed in this
picture? What might you notice today (or have noticed) that speaks to you of
God’s kingdom, God at work around you?
