Pentecost, by El Greco1541-1614
It might seem odd to start an Advent series with
a picture of Pentecost, but this is the last mention of Mary in the Bible. The
Acts of the Apostles (1.14) tells us that she was one of the group of disciples
who were gathered in Jerusalem after the Ascension of Jesus, waiting for the
promised gift of the Holy Spirit – here symbolised by the dove and the flames
on the disciples’ heads. This tells us that she was well-known to the early
Christians, whose stories later informed the Gospel writers.
