The discovery of the Saviour in the Temple, by William Holman Hunt 1854–1860
Holman Hunt’s picture shows the moment when Mary and Joseph find the twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple, debating the law with the religious elders. They were heading back towards Galilee when they realised he was missing. “Did you not know I would be in my Father’s house?” he asks them when they remonstrate with him. The teachers of the law, meanwhile, have been amazed at his wisdom.
