The Arrival in Bethlehem: Luc Olivier Merson 1846-1920
In Merson’s painting, Joseph tries to persuade
an inhabitant of Bethlehem to give shelter to his pregnant wife. Mary has
collapsed onto her knees, unable to go any further. The emptiness of the street
and the locked up houses emphasize their plight. Will anyone find a space for
them?
