Picturing Mary: Day 9

Lorenzo Costa: Annunciation

Having looked at some of the Marian stories in the life of the teenage and adult Jesus – stories for which the Gospel writers probably drawn from eyewitness accounts - we’re now going to begin at the beginning, or at least, at the “back-story” which the Gospel writers told of his birth, beginning with some images of the annunciation. The first is by Lorenzo Costa (1460- 1535), and shows Mary apparently engrossed in the Scriptures, hardly noticing the dove, representing the Holy Spirit descending on her.
