Picturing Mary: Day 11

Cestello Annuncation: Sandro Botticelli 1445-1510

Yesterday’s annunciation was all about stillness, but this one, by Botticelli, is full of movement. The angel appears just to have swooped in with his news, and Mary both shrinks away but also reaches out to the angel. Will she lean into God’s call, or run from it? It seems to hang in the balance at this moment.
